The Department of Marine Civilizations offers students an incredible opportunity to research the history, archaeology, and fabric of marine cultures and how the natural environment affected their development and history.

The Department focuses on the various disciplines connected to this field, including underwater and coastal archaeology, marine biology and ecology, marine history, geology, and geomorphology. This multidisciplinary program which includes field trips, courses and hands-on fieldwork, offers students wishing to study the relationship between man and the sea advanced expertise and experience in research methods. The program stresses the role of ports, ships, and seamanship in Mediterranean marine heritage.

Following acceptance to the Department’s doctoral program, the student will submit a detailed research proposal. At least one doctoral advisor must be part of the Department’s regular faculty. The doctoral subject must be marine and/or coast related. The research proposal should be submitted to the Doctoral Committee before the end  of the first year of studies (Stage I).
The Doctoral Committee will decide whether to appoint an expanded Advisory Committee for the student. An emphasis will be put on the extent to which the thesis is linked directly to a sea and/or coast related subject. Once the Departmental Doctoral Committee approves the proposal, the student can begin Stage II. The advisor/s will decide how many courses the student will be required to enroll in, pending approval from the Departmental Doctoral Committee.
