Master’s degree in Marine Technologies
The study of the sea, especially the deep oceans, is essentially analogous to the study of outer space and, like the latter, relies on advanced and mostly unmanned technologies. The objective of the Hatter Department of Marine Technologies is to develop the ability of marine technologies to maneuver underwater and collect and deliver data.
Research in the department includes the development of unique means suited for the challenges of the marine environment, such as the hydrostatic pressure and corrosive environment of the deep sea, remote communications and sensing based on soundwaves rather than radio waves, optical distortions (color changes and other distortions in optical sensing), and advanced signal processing to enable studying the subterranean dimension of the sea floor. The department’s researchers work together with the researchers of other departments in the School of Marine Sciences, thereby making it possible for marine research in Israel to leap ahead.
Israel is currently experiencing a significant gap of knowledge in marine studies, and highly qualified manpower is needed in the industry developing in the field. The Department of Marine Technologies provides for this need by training professionals of the highest possible caliber in the core fields of marine technologies.
The department accepts graduates of 4-year B.Sc. programs with a GPA of at least 80 percent in Mechanical Engineering, Electricity, Electro-Optics, Aeronautics, Computer Sciences, and/or related sciences from an accredited institution of higher education in Israel or abroad. Exceptions to this will be referred to the departmental committee for consideration.
For admissions, candidates must submit a résumé, official grades sheet from previous degrees, and a brief letter of intention describing their intended field of research, as well as the names of two references.
