The purpose of the Bachelor degree in the Department of Counseling and Human Development is to provide a broad theoretical and empirical basis in the field of psychology and counseling of the individual. The curriculum is based on studies of human behavior with an emphasis on developmental processes of life, from infancy, through childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Students will acquire knowledge about human behavior, the normative development of children, youth and adults, as well as about adjustment problems and populations at risk. All this occurs while understanding the contribution of the family, relationships with peers, school system and cultural context to normative or dysfunctional behavior. Students will develop insights that will enable them to understand and identify the strengths and weaknesses of children, adolescents and adults and will acquire knowledge on interventions aimed at increasing mental well-being and fulfilling the intellectual and emotional potential of the target populations.
Each year, the program combines experience from practical work within the community with a focus on normative processes and developmental transitions (for example, from kindergarten to school) as well as cultural transitions (for example, immigrants) in educational-community settings.
